2023 MFA Thesis Exhibition: Chaotic Good at UCSB's Art, Design, & Architecture Museum

in order to give birth to a dancing star.

The 2023 Master of Fine Arts Program graduating artists present: Chaotic Good. Deriving from a fantasy role-playing game, the chaotic good alignment defines characters that epitomize independent thought and practices, striving to achieve what they subjectively define as "good." They are ingenious, adaptable, and intrepid. Disregarding the boundaries of traditional media, the exhibiting artists interrogate contemporary modes of communication and sociability, human and non-human interactions, nature and the landscape, and the making of biography, memory, and history. Their artworks are layered and unbridled, prompting new ways of being and doing, forging pathways for future explorations by themselves and others.

Kevin Clancy constructs delicate, entangled relics of human-computer interactions ablaze in the ominous, yet
ethereal, glow of an uncertain future.

The collective eka.gren performs within an organic cage that reenacts the womb, blurring the divide between
human and animal existence in the continuous cycle of birth, life, and decay.

Maja Skjøth Hegelund imagines void-like environments with suspended fictional characters, always in waiting,
that succeed or fail in their fabricated world.

Military brat Matthew Robert Johnson unsettles the viewer from his camouflaged watchtower which
emanates strange sounds, putting into question quotidian warfare tactics, surveillance, and paranoia.

Artist and part-time geologist Dani Kwan surveys the landscape of California through scientific research
methods, bridging the divide between the white cube and the geosphere.

Johnny Onionseed solidifies his multiverse of existence, offering a glimpse into another world, another realm,
and another state of being with the heads, bodies, and words of strangers as your copilot.

Kate Saubestre thematizes the open road, a space abundant with possibility – as Western progress-centered
mythologies would have us believe – but one that fundamentally alters our way of interacting with our
environment.

CAÓTICO BUENO

Yo te digo: uno ha de albergar caos dentro de sí
para engendrar una estrella danzante

Los artistas que se gradúan en 2023 del Programa de maestría en Bellas Artes presentan: Caótico Bueno. En los juegos de rol, en los que se inspira la exposición, personajes de alineamiento moral caótico bueno exhiben pensamientos y prácticas independientes. Estos personajes son ingeniosos, de mente abierta e intrépidos.

Ignorando los límites creativos impuestos por medios tradicionales, los artistas que exponen en esta muestra cuestionan modos de comunicación y sociabilidad contemporáneos, interacciones humanas y no humanas, la naturaleza y el paisaje, así como la producción biográfica, de la memoria y la historia. Sus obras de arte presentan múltiples capas y son irrefrenables; proponen nuevas formas de ser y hacer abriendo caminos a futuras exploraciones, tanto propias como ajenas.

Kevin Clancy elabora reliquias delicadas y enredadas procedentes de interacciones entre
humanos y computadoras. Estas centellean en el resplandor ominoso, aunque etéreo, de un
futuro incierto.

El colectivo eka.gren actúa dentro de una jaula orgánica que recrea un útero, difuminando la división
entre la existencia humana y animal en el ciclo continuo de nacimiento, vida y
decadencia.

Maja Skjøth Hegelund imagina entornos vacíos con personajes ficticios suspendidos, siempre a
la espera, que triunfan o fracasan en su mundo fabricado.

El maleducado militar Matthew Robert Johnson inquieta al espectador desde su torre de
vigilancia camuflada de la que emanan sonidos extraños, cuestionando las tácticas de guerra
cotidianas, la vigilancia y la paranoia.

El artista, y geólogo a tiempo parcial, Dani Kwan examina el paisaje de California a través de
métodos de investigación científica, cerrando la brecha entre el cubo blanco y la geosfera.

Johnny Onionseed consolida su multiverso existencial ofreciendo una mirada rápida a otro
mundo, otro reino y otro estado de vida con las cabezas, los cuerpos y las palabras de extraños
como tu copiloto.

Kate Saubestre explora el camino abierto, un espacio lleno de potencial, como nos harían creer
las mitologías occidentales, centradas en el progreso, pero que altera fundamentalmente nuestra
forma de interactuar con el entorno.
