Paul T. Frankl and the Modern American Design

A Lecture by Design Historian Christopher Long

AD&A Museum, UC Santa Barbara In conjunction with the release of his new book, Paul T. Frankl: Autobiography, Christopher Long will present a lecture on Frankl and his life. From the 1920s through the 1950s, Paul Frankl was one of the leaders of the efforts to forge a distinctive American design aesthetic. This lecture will explore Frankl’s long and rich career, examining his varied works in New York and Southern California and his role in promoting American design.

In a special added attraction, hear and see a preview of Long’s forthcoming book Kem Weber: Designer and Architect (Yale University Press). Christopher Long will lead an informal discussion about Kem Weber, around a display of drawings and photographs from Weber’s archive in the Architecture and Design Collection.

Christopher Long is professor of architectural and design history at the University of Texas at Austin. He studied at the universities of Graz, Vienna, and Munich and received his doctorate at the University of Texas in 1993. He is the author of Josef Frank: Life and Work (University of Chicago Press, 2002), Paul T. Frankl and Modern American Design (Yale University Press, 2007), The Looshaus (Yale University Press, 2012).
