Harmonia Rosales: Entwined
In January 2022, the AD&A Museum partnered with artist Harmonia Rosales to create the exhibition Harmonia Rosales: Entwined. The show focused on Harmonia's interweaving of representations from ancient Greek and Yoruba mythologies, challenging the viewers ideas about identity and empowerment. Within Harmonia's work, women and people of color assume roles of power and beauty as protagonists of stories from the past. Harmonia Rosales, Oshosi Gets His Crown, 2019.
Oil on Belgian linen, 23 x 20 in.
Oshosi Gets His Crown is based on King Oedipus from Greek mythology. The painting shows the hunter, Oshosi, after he has unwittingly killed his mother. Oshosi was given a quest to trap a rare bird as a gift for Olofi, one of the three manifestations of the supreme god in Yoruba religion. After finding the bird, Oshosi's mother believed the bird to be dinner and killed it. Oshosi discovered the dead bird and trapped a second one to give to Olofi. Oshosi crowned by Olofi, was given the title orisha of contemplation - loving the arts and of beautiful things. In addition to the crowning, Olofi granted the hunter a wish; he asked for his arrow to end the life of the individual who killed the first bird. Upon his request, Olofi pierced the heart of Oshosi's mother's heart. While Oshosi is commonly viewed as a model of justice, Rosales' imagery emphasizes a narrative of vulnerability to expresses the cost and irrevocable loss caused by Oshosi's actions.
